A Renter Interview: Much Like A Job Interview
I've done several renter interviews over the years. I am still shocked as to how people dress when they show up for the meeting. A group of 3 (in particular) showed up in worn out tee shirts, shorts, flip flops and looked like they just got out of a homeless shelter (and maybe they did).
Here's the real truth of the matter, if a renter is going to meet a landlord to rent his asset (which maybe worth several tens of thousands of dollars) then such a renter should be dressed professionally and respectably when meeting with a landlord for the very first time. A first impression is critically important.
Many times, landlords see renters at interviews and they are dressed poorly. Thinking like a landlord, "If these renters can't even take care of their personal appearance, how are they ever going to be able to take care of the property or even pay their rent on time?"
Needless to say I didn't call the "flip flop gang" back to see if they were interested. Why? Because I wasn't interested.
Here's what you should wear to your renter interview instead:
When people see a well-dressed person, the first thing that comes to mind is: successful and responsible. If you want to win at the renter interview, dressing the part is the first step to securing your own place.
